The Fear of What?

From the BBC:

The fear of the number 666 is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.

Alright, thats it. This has gone way too far. The psychologists are documenting fears over symbols in Revelation. Now of course some people may need the recognition because they have a real fear, but fundamentalist/dispensationalist hysteria is not that. Seriously, this needs to stop.

  1. If it’s any consolation, it’s not just in Revelation. Solomon is said to have received 666 talents of gold yearly from his empire (tributes, etc.). See 1 Kings 10:14 or 2 Chronicles 9:13. It’s a pretty interesting commenction, especially in light of the consistent violations of kingly regulations set down in the Torah (hoarding great wealth, importing horses from Egypt, having too many wives, etc…see Deut. 17).

Anyway, those are just some thoughts. It’s pretty sad that such a phobia could be widespread enough to warrant documentation, though i will also add that prior to developing any sort of conscious theological framework, such dispensationalist stigmas had a huge effect on me. Even now, whenever I see the number 666 I can feel that little twinge, the red flags if you know what I mean. It’s weird…

Yeah, its odd. I still get a bit of a gut check having grown up in psuedo-dispensational land. The opposite is also true of 777. I even noticed it in Hot Fuzz. I’m not sure exactly what they meant by it – perhaps divine justice?
